Addressing the rising demand for high-quality Special Educational Needs provision is a critical challenge for local authorities nationwide. In North Tyneside, Beacon Hill School has met this challenge head-on with an innovative and inspiring solution designed and constructed by TG Escapes: a bespoke, two-storey modular building that is net-zero in operation. Delivered in just 49 weeks on-site, the new facility has not only expanded the school’s capacity by 60 places but has also profoundly enhanced its ability to deliver a specialised curriculum in a nurturing, purpose-built environment.
Beacon Hill caters to pupils aged 2-19 with a wide spectrum of complex needs, including severe learning difficulties, physical impairments, and autism. The brief required a space that was more than just functional; it needed to be a stimulating environment designed around the specific needs of its students. The resulting building is a testament to bespoke design, housing 10 classrooms, two PMLD bases, hygiene rooms, sensory spaces, and a staff room.
The design reflects a deep understanding of the user's needs. Biophilic principles are evident throughout, with natural timber used at every opportunity to create a calming atmosphere and connect pupils with nature. This philosophy is supported by state-of-the-art features, including:
The panelised modular system allowed for a variety of room sizes, providing the flexibility needed for different learning activities and ample storage for specialist equipment.
The impact extends far beyond increased capacity. The facility’s layout enables a zoned approach to learning, allowing educators to create distinct areas tailored to different pupil groups. This supports a more effective delivery of the curriculum and fosters positive social interaction in a managed setting.
Demonstrating a truly collaborative approach, the project also provided a unique learning opportunity. The school and construction team organised a site tour for students, offering them a firsthand insight into the worlds of architecture and engineering, bringing their classroom learning to life.
The project is a shining example of how innovative design and modular construction can create exceptional educational spaces. It showcases a compelling case for biophilic, bespoke builds in the SEN sector.
Rachel Coyne, School Organisation and Investment Manager at North Tyneside Council, states, “TG Escapes have been an excellent contractor to work with. Their attention to detail, timeliness of communications, and quality of product is exceptional. It has been a pleasure to have them deliver this scheme."
